Meet Pastor Reeder

Screen Shot 2014-01-27 at 1.30.25 PMDr. Harry L. Reeder III is the Senior Pastor of Briarwood Presbyterian Church in Birmingham, Alabama. He and his wife, Cindy, are natives of Charlotte, North Carolina. They have three children: Jennifer Toomer, Harry IV, and Abigail Leib (Ryan). Additionally, they are the proud grandparents of Brianna, C.J. and Mack Toomer and Matthias, Taylor and Mitchell Elizabeth Leib.

Pastor Reeder began his undergraduate work at East Carolina University. After his marriage to Cindy, he withdrew in order to allow his wife to finish her BA degree in chemistry from UNCC. During the first year of their marriage in 1969, Harry was called by the Gospel of grace in Jesus Christ to a personal relationship with the risen Savior. After Cindy’s graduation, he returned to East Carolina University. Heeding God’s call in his life to the Gospel ministry, he left ECU and finished his undergraduate work at Covenant College, graduating in 1974. With a degree in History and Bible, he began to pastor an Independent Bible Church in the Chattanooga area. This ministry continued for six years, during which he went part-time to Tennessee Temple Seminary. Due to growing convictions in certain areas of theology and ecclesiology, Pastor Reeder resigned his charge in Chattanooga and went into a Pastorate of the Presbyterian Church in America in Miami, Florida—Pinelands Presbyterian Church. While in Miami, he completed his Master of Divinity Degree with Westminster Seminary through the Florida Theological Center. Pinelands Presbyterian Church enjoyed the blessing of God’s sovereign grace and grew from an attendance of 50 to more than 400 in his two-and-a-half year pastorate.

In February of 1983, Pastor Reeder was called to Christ Covenant Presbyterian Church as their founding Pastor. The ministry began with 38 committed members, and in seventeen years attendance grew to more than 3,000 during the Lord’s Day morning worship services.

The Lord has also brought into existence a growing Bible teaching radio ministry entitled “InPerspective.”  The program is heard Monday through Friday on a number of stations in the southeast. Pastor Reeder also has a 10 minute daily radio program called “Conversations with Harry” as well as 1 minute InPerspective spots.

An increasing amount of his time is devoted to leadership development, Christian Manhood Seminars, and lectures on the War between the States, with a biographical focus upon Generals Robert E. Lee, Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson, Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, George Washington Carver, and Booker T. Washington. Pastor Reeder has written a book published by Crossway called The Leadership Dynamic.

Additionally, he is devoted to the ministry of Church Revitalization, hosting multiple “Embers to a Flame” conferences both nationally and internationally each year. Pastor Reeder completed his doctoral dissertation on The Biblical Paradigm of Church Revitalization and received his Doctor of Ministry Degree from Reformed Theological Seminary, Charlotte, North Carolina (where he serves as adjunct faculty member and holds the same status at Birmingham Theological Seminary, Birmingham, Alabama) and is the author of From Embers to a Flame – How God Can Revitalize Your Church.

Along with a number of published works, he has recently contributed a chapter in the book John Calvin: A Heart for Devotion, Doctrine & Doxology on the life of John Calvin as a preacher for Ligonier Ministries to honor of his 500th birthday.

Providentially, Pastor Reeder received a call from the Lord to become the Senior Pastor of Briarwood Presbyterian Church in Birmingham, Alabama in September of 1999.

ABOUT BRIARWOOD

At Briarwood Presbyterian Church our desire is to be a Gospel driven and Christ centered church with an unalterable commitment to fulfilling our Lord’s Great Commission as He allows us to be engaged in “making disciples of all the nations.” church front_webHowever, our very first passion is that men and women might know the glory, majesty and grace of the Lord Jesus through a personal relationship with Him as Lord and Savior.

Consistently, Christ would issue a commanding invitation – “Come, follow me.” His Good News message was that all who come and follow Him will be saved by His grace, will grow in His grace, and will have the enormous privilege of living for the glory of His grace. To all who come to Christ, He will never leave you nor forsake you. He will save you from your sins because He has paid for each and every one of them on the cross; when we falter, He will persistently, powerfully, patiently, and personally renew us, forgive us, and grow us day by day.

One of the ways God’s grace comes to His people so that they can grow is through the ministry of prayer and the Word. These are the two pillars upon which Briarwood has and continues to build her ministry for Christ our Lord. Secondly is to implement those “means” that He has ordained in His Word and promised to use in the lives of His people so that as we are saved by grace we can also be transformed by His grace. Therefore, please know that our desire is to humbly yet boldly preach His Word from our pulpit, in our congregational community Sunday School classes, and in our small group discipleship ministry. We want to teach and facilitate intercessory prayer throughout the entire membership of our congregation while promoting intimate fellowship as we enjoy the benefits and blessings of loving one another as Christ has loved us. Our desire is that Briarwood would be an instrument in the Hands of God to develop vital and spiritually healthy Christians, families, and followers of Christ.

To do this, we have put in place a spiritual fitness plan of Christ-centered disciple making that is desired to produce W.E.L.L. Christians.

  • W. Worship: our ministry of upreach to God
  • E. Evangelism: our ministry of outreach to the world
  • L. Love: our ministry inreach to one another
  • L. Learning: our ministry of downreach to ourselves

Pray for us to be faithful to our Lord Jesus Christ to glorify the Father and be surrendered to the power of the Holy Spirit. Please join us whenever you can. We love to have visitors! Will you please let us know if we can assist you in making a personal commitment to Christ as Lord and Savior, to trust Him and follow Him? Also, please let us know if we can assist you in any way as you “grow in the grace and knowledge of Christ.”

For Christ, the Gospel, and His Church,

WHAT DO WE BELIEVE?

  • We believe the Bible is the written word of God, inspired by the Holy Spirit and without error in the original manuscripts. The Bible is the revelation of God’s truth and is infallible and authoritative in all matters of faith and practice.
  • We believe in the Holy Trinity. There is one God, who exists eternally in three persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
  • We believe that all are sinners and totally unable to save themselves from God’s displeasure, except by His mercy.
  • We believe that salvation is by God alone as He sovereignly chooses those He will save. We believe His choice is based on His grace, not on any human individual merit, or foreseen faith.
  • We believe that Jesus Christ is the eternal Son of God, who through His perfect life and sacrificial death atoned for the sins of all who will trust in Him, alone, for salvation.
  • We believe that God is gracious and faithful to His people, not simply as individuals but as families in successive generations according to His Covenant promises.
  • We believe that the Holy Spirit indwells God’s people and gives them the strength and wisdom to trust Christ and follow Him.
  • We believe that Jesus will return, bodily and visibly, to judge all mankind and to receive His people to Himself.
  • We believe that all aspects of our lives are to be lived to the glory of God under the Lordship of Jesus Christ.

Come and join us in worship this Sunday; we can’t wait to see you!
